Kingdom Living Trusting God

Why did God reduce Gideon’s army?

The LORD said to Gideon, “You have too many men for me to deliver Midian into their hands. In order that Israel may not boast against me that her own strength has saved her, announce now to the people, ‘Anyone who trembles with fear may turn back and leave Mount Gilead.’ ” So twenty-two thousand men left, while ten thousand remained. Judges 7:2-3

When you experience victory in your life, do you forget God? God knows your heart just like HE knew the Israelites’ heart. HE knew that if the Israelites were to gain victory over the Midianites, Israel would forget God. Your sinful tendency is to be arrogant and boast of your strength, not God’s strength.

What was the purpose of the desert for the Israelites? The purpose of the desert is to humble you, test you to know what is in your heart, will you be faithful to God.

Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase and may enter and possess the land that the LORD promised on oath to your forefathers. Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way in the desert these forty years, to humble you and to test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands. He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years. Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the LORD your God disciplines you. Deuteronomy 8:1-5

1 John 2:16
For everything in the world—the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does—comes not from the Father but from the world.

The purpose of the desert is to humble you, to test you, and to see what is in your heart. Will you follow the Word of God or boast of your own accomplishments?  Gideon obeyed and trusted God by reducing his army so he would only be able to boast in the strength and provision of the Lord. Walk in the strength and confidence of the Lord today. Remember how God delivered the Israelites out of Egypt. Remember why God gave victory to the Israelites with a smaller army. Your confidence and strength is in God as you possess the Land promised to you by your forefathers.

You can trust God’s Word.

Walk in the confidence of God’s Love today.
